Dental exams are performed at your regularly scheduled check up appointments. All regular check up appointments will include the following:

  • Dental examination of diagnostic X-rays (radiographs): Essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions.
  • Oral cancer screening: Examination of the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
  • Gum disease evaluation: Examination of the gums and bone around the teeth for any signs of periodontal disease.
  • Examination of tooth decay: Examination of all tooth surfaces for decay with specialized instruments.
  • Examination of existing restorations: Examination of current fillings, crowns, bridges, etc

Dental sealants act as a barrier to prevent cavities. Sealants are a thin, plastic coating painted on the chewing surfaces of teeth -- usually the back teeth (the premolars and molars) -- to prevent tooth decay.

The sealant is painted onto the tooth enamel, where it bonds directly to the tooth and hardens. This plastic resin bonds into the grooves chewing surfaces of the teeth. The sealant acts as a barrier, protecting enamel from plaque and acids. As long as the sealant remains intact, the tooth surface will be protected from decay. Sealants last several years before a reapplication is needed

Fluoride treatments help prevent tooth decay by making the tooth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth. It also reverses early decay.

Skylyn Dental Associates is committed to providing innovative dental products and preventive solutions for our patients' dental health.
